Happy New Year everyone!
It’s a time for fresh beginnings, new resolutions, and saving money on your property taxes!
Filing for a homestead exemption sounds a bit intimidating, but it’s a fairly straight forward process. This blog post will have all the links you’ll need to learn the ins and outs of homestead exemptions, to see the various ways you could qualify for an exemption, and how to file (some counties even let you file online). Filing your homestead exemption is completely FREE!
Perhaps the most important item to know is the deadline for filing.
ALL EXEMPTIONS MUST BE FILED BY APRIL 30th!
The second most important item to understand is what a homestead exemption actually is. A homestead exemption reduces taxes by lowering a home’s taxable value. All school districts offer a $25,000 homestead exemption, and some taxing units offer additional optional reductions for the homestead exemption. Homeowners can lower their property taxes by applying for these exemptions for which they are eligible. You must own your home AND occupy it as your principal residence on January 1st. You can have only ONE principal residence and ONE homestead exemption.
There are additional exemptions you may be entitled to as well. Some of these are exemptions for homeowners who are sixty-five years or older, disabled persons, veterans, surviving spouses of veterans, and exemptions for homes with solar or wind power.
